CANADIAN NAVAL CENTENNIAL

NATIONAL EVENTS

A number of events, programs and activities are planned in celebration of the Canadian Naval Centenial 2010. These includes programs such as the Naval Namesake program which will formally recognize the relationship between ships currently in service with the Canadian Navy and those ships that have been in commissioned service in the past that share their names with a Naval Namesake city, town, village and First Nations community in approximately 350 locations across Canada. Other activities will include parades and ceremonies in the navy's main base areas in Halifax, NS, Esquimalt (Victoria), BC, in Ottawa and the 24 cities that are the locations of Naval Reserve Divisions on 4 May 2010 - the official founding date of the Canadian Navy. In Esquimalt and Halifax, International Fleet Reviews consisting of naval vessels representing the world's navies will take place in June and July respectively. In Ottawa, on 4th May 2010 a specially forged Canadian Naval Centennial Bell will be presented to the People of Canada at the House of Commons as a gift from the Canadian Navy as that date will be proclaimed by Parliament officially as the Navy Day.

LOCAL EVENTS

As these events occur across Canada in this naval centennial year in communities with a Regular Force and Naval Reserve presence other communities are also planning their own local naval centennial activities in celebration of this significant milestone in the Canadian Navy's and our national history. Naval centennial stakeholders composed of groups such as the Naval Veteran's Association, Navy League, Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans and Royal Canadian Legions, to name a few are planning their own centennial activities.
